Posted by Timby on June 15, 2020  /   Posted in Uncategorized

Congratulations! If you have found this article then you have started a craft journey that will fill you with joy and satisfaction for many years to come! Plus knitting is a valuable skill on its own and has been for centuries.

Where do you start when it comes to beginners knitting? It’s nice to dream of that complex fairisle jumper for Winter, but we also have to be a bit realistic when it comes to our first project with the clicking sticks. Selecting a beautiful wool like Malabrigo Rios, Sock or Rowan Felted Tweed is very special and makes your project feel amazing! You will find you take extra care and receive lots more enjoyment when you knit with a quality natural fibre!

So with that in mind here are a few ideas to get you started with your brand new yarn related hobby!

Scarf

There are literally tons of different scarf patterns available for free on the internet and if you take a quick look you are bound to find one that meets your skill level. Whether you are just planning to do some plain knitting or if you are practicing the old knit one purl one, scarfs are a fantastic place to start knitting because they can be as simple or as complex as you want them to be!

As an added bonus, you will be able to create something that is practical and useful! Imagine your friend’s faces when you tell them your latest fashion accessory was crafted by your own hand!

Beanie

In the winter it’s important to be comfortable, and nothing screams comfort like a hand knitted Beanie for your head! Like the above mentioned scarfs, beanies can come in a variety of patterns to fit your style and skill set, plus they are also useful too!

If you are feeling adventurous, you can even craft yourself a gorgeous pom-pom for the top, just like you would add a cherry to a nicely iced cake!

There are a lot of different Beanie patterns out there on the web or Ravelry and this is because they are great for beginner knitters. Whether you are making for yourself or you want to give a gift to your kids or friends, then a hand knitted beanie is just the right project to start on.

Baby Booties

Ah the circle of life, isn’t it wonderful? I don’t know about you, but a lot of my friends and even my children are having children of their own. A wonderful gift you can give to them is some handmade knitted baby booties! These are so cute! There is a literal plethora of different patterns out there for you to start with no matter what your skill level with knitting is.

These are also a great project as they aren’t too time consuming to make, they can be tailored to the baby’s size and colour scheme and they will give you a great sense of achievement as well as excitement for the new parents. Plus those little tootsies  won’t get cold, so everyone wins! If you are struggling for ideas baby booties are a fantastic place to start.

Stuffed toys

If you want to show your quirky side, or if you have little ones around (or just if you want to enjoy them yourself) knitting little stuffed animals are a great place to start when it comes to knitting. First of all you will have to pick your subject! I suggest a cat or even a sheep, that’s where I personally started, and find yourself a free pattern and get knitting! Once you are done, just fill the body of the animal with some wool fleece and sew up the sides. Voila, next thing you know you have an adorable friend that can sit on your desk with you, be enjoyed by the kids or even snuggle into bed with you.

Blanket

Blankets are another fantastic starting point for young or old knitters a like. Whether it’s a hefty throw blanket or something to cover your legs in the cold, blankets are both easy to knit and also another useful and practical item to begin with.

Just like the other items on this list, there are a large number of different free blanket patterns online that will match your level of skill with the needles. They can be as simple or as complex as you like. A Blanket maybe just the right project for you to push yourself a little bit further and try  a more  challenging, or complex pattern. If you take your time, you will surprise yourself at what you can achieve!

Well that’s it for today my fellow knitters! Hopefully this small article has inspired beginner and expert knitters alike to create something new and unique to you. Knitting is such a wonderful hobby and once you get started you will start to be overrun with new ideas of what you can craft for yourself or your friends and you will be able to push yourself to create more and more complex things with every new pattern!

Good luck with your new project and keep on knitting! Cheers Leonie.
